I have enjoyed Janine Marsh's blog for several years, and this book gives even more details of her unexpected life in a very rural village in the north of France. Her eccentric neighbors, the village events, and her "being a maid" to her dozens of animals make a fascinating read. It's so different from the "I moved to an elegant part of France" books. With Janine, you get an understanding of French life as it really is for most people outside of the cities and glamour sites. She writes about her neighbors with true affection, while entertaining us with all their eccentricities. I had to limit myself to reading one month a day so the book would last longer. Move along... there's nothing to see here! If you've read Frances Mayes and Peter Mayle, you've read this story before, and written more entertainingly by those authors. I knew we were in trouble by the bottom of page 10, when, while surveying a seemingly abandoned, dilapidated house, "the rain stopped and a beam of sunlight broke through the dark clouds," and church bells rang in the village. This "coup de fondre" was the "sound of fate," and in due course the author and her husband buy the wreck of a house and spend the next ten years restoring it. A complete tear down and rebuild would have been more merciful for everyone involved. (The one element missing from this book is Mayes and Mayles cast of colorfully eccentric plumbers, electricians, masons, etc.)This is one of the few books I couldn't wait to put down and toss in the garbage. It really is tragic that trees died so that this story could see the light of day.
